One of the best ways to support members of your local community is to participate in Small Business Saturday. Always held the day after Black Friday, it’s this weekend!
In the midst of the recession in 2010 — American Express created Small Business Saturday® to encourage people to Shop Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. Then in 2011, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day, with officials in all 50 states participating. In an effort to support their local communities, organizations across the country signed up to serve as Neighborhood Champions. These supporters brought their communities together with events and activities on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.
You might not think about it, but every time you pick up a cup of coffee from your favorite neighborhood cafe or buy a gift from a local artist’s online store, you’re shopping small and making a difference. There are many ways to support small businesses every day. Not just on November 26. Here are some easy ways to become engaged…
- Buy gift cards.
- Post positive online reviews.
- Shop small business before big businesses.
- Share their social media posts.
- Check-in with small business owners and employees and see if they have a special event you can help spread the word on.
- Refer the business to your friends and family.
- Buy their products online.
So, let’s get out this weekend into our neighborhoods and support out local businesses. Buy those special holiday gifts from those who we interact with every day. When they thrive, we thrive!
